Kato Paphos is where ancient history meets modern Mediterranean living. Whether you're here for a week or a month, this coastal neighbourhood in western Cyprus has a way of making you want to stay longer. As your hosts, we've put together everything you need to know — from must-see sights to our favourite dinner spots.
The Must-See Sights
Start your exploration right on your doorstep. The apartment is just 650 metres from the Paphos Archaeological Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), home to exquisite Roman mosaics in the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus, Aion, and Orpheus. Entry is just €4.50, and early morning visits are magical — you'll have the mosaics almost to yourself.
- Paphos Castle — The medieval fort at the harbour, rebuilt by the Ottomans. Best at sunset with a drink at the waterfront. (500m from apartment)
- Tombs of the Kings — Carved underground tombs dating back to the 4th century BC. Dramatic and photogenic. (2.5km, easy walk along the coast)
- St. Paul's Pillar & Agia Kyriaki — Where the apostle Paul was allegedly whipped. A beautiful church still in active use. (600m)
- Paphos Lighthouse — Less touristy, great for sunset walks along the cliff path. (1km)
Best Restaurants & Cafes
Kato Paphos has everything from authentic Cypriot meze to international cuisine. Here are our tried-and-tested favourites:
- Hondros — The best meze in Paphos, full stop. Family-run, generous portions, book ahead on weekends. (1km from apartment)
- Kiniras Garden — Romantic courtyard dining in a restored mansion. Outstanding wine list with Cypriot wines. (1.2km)
- Fat Mama's — Great brunch spot with harbour views. Their eggs Benedict and fresh juices are legendary. (600m)
- Pinto Art Cafe — Perfect for morning coffee and people-watching near the harbour. (550m)
- Ta Piatakia — Tiny, authentic, no-frills taverna. Go for the kleftiko and halloumi. Cash only. (800m)
Sunset Spots You Can Walk To
Paphos sunsets are legendary — the Mediterranean sky turns gold, pink and purple almost every evening. Here are our top spots, all walkable from the apartment:
- Paphos Castle pier — The classic. Grab a drink from a harbour bar and watch the sun drop behind the castle walls. (500m)
- The Lighthouse cliff path — Less crowded, with 270° sea views. Bring a blanket and a bottle of Commandaria wine. (1km)
- Fabrica Hill — Ancient rock-cut chambers overlooking the harbour. A photographer's dream at golden hour. (700m)
Day Trips Worth Taking
Paphos is also the perfect base for exploring western Cyprus. You can rent a car easily (we can recommend agencies), or use the local buses for some destinations.
- Aphrodite's Rock (Petra tou Romiou) — The mythical birthplace of Aphrodite. 25 minutes by car, stunning photo opportunity. Go in the afternoon for the best light.
- Akamas Peninsula — Wild, untouched nature reserve. Hike the Aphrodite Trail, swim at Blue Lagoon, or take a boat trip from Latchi. (40 min by car)
- Troodos Mountains — Painted Byzantine churches (UNESCO), cedar forests, and cooler temperatures. Perfect escape on hot summer days. (1 hour)
- Avakas Gorge — A dramatic 30m-deep gorge you can walk through. Easy access, bring water shoes. (30 min)
Practical Tips
- Getting around: Bus 603 connects Kato Paphos to the harbour and Coral Bay (€1.50). For Tombs of the Kings, walk or take bus 615. Bolt/taxi apps work well.
- Water: Tap water is safe but mineral-tasting. We provide a filtered water jug in the apartment.
- Language: English is widely spoken everywhere. Greek is appreciated but not necessary.
- Tipping: 10% at restaurants is standard, not obligatory. Round up for taxis.
- Sun protection: Even in spring/autumn, Cyprus sun is strong. SPF 50 and a hat are recommended.
